About Call + Continuum

A collaboration with the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme.

About The Call Log

We have opened a line: A space to listen, to archive, to honour those who journey with us.

We gather the voices of our collaborators.
Their thoughts, their stories, their frequencies.

We begin with Call+Continuum; a theme we explored through being commissioned by the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme, to curate sounds in celebration of the role South African women play in the creative industries. These are women who are not just making music, but holding memory.

Resisting erasure.
Declaring existence.

The Call is loud, intentional, undeniable.
The Continuum is subtle, generational, grounding.

We asked: What does Call + Continuum mean to you?

Through phone calls, voice notes and conversation, they answered.

There are their reflections.
Their words become the archive.
Their voices carry the line forward.

As the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme unfolds, the accompanying soundscape titled ‘Call+Continuum’, serves as an auditory extension of the programme’s ethos which celebrates women as the conscious custodians they are in our industry.

This curated selection consists entirely of South African women musicians and sound artists. In featuring the pioneering works of Buhlebendalo, DESIREE, Nobuhle Ashanti, Thandi Ntuli, SEI SIREN, and Msaki to name a few; the soundscape is not merely a collection of songs but a sonic framework that holds their truths, aspirations, questions, and devotions.

The score exists hand in hand with the cover art titled ‘Beauty’s Psalm’ by visual artist Mankebe Seakgoe. The piece is a reflection of the matrilineal bonds that connect past, present, and future through story and sound. In reflecting about learning storytelling from and through her grandmother, Seakgoe states that: “It’s almost as if the voice in my head that reads, is hers. The painting is a love letter to my grandmother…a silent song.”

In this way, Call+Continuum is itself a psalm. It is an ode to the women who, through their music, redefine artistic boundaries and form new cultural lexicons. Individually, and collectively in conversation with each other, these songs represent a deliberate act of acknowledgment and furtherance: acknowledging the complicated foundations built upon the land on which we stand, while intently shaping the future heritages we excitedly look forward to inheriting.

In also accepting the provocation embedded in the current art fair theme of PLAY, the playlist stands as a celebration and an interrogation—a participatory act nonetheless. It invites listeners to engage with the evolving narratives of our ecosystem, not as passive observers, but as co-creators of meaning.

As the music accompanies you through Cape Town’s cultural topography, may the sounds also encourage an inward reflection and an outward gesture. By actively listening to the contributions these women have added to our sonic landscape, may you be emboldened to honour their works in deed, and in continued custodianship.
