About Call + Continuum

A collaboration with the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme.

About The Call Log

We have opened a line: A space to listen, to archive, to honour those who journey with us.

We gather the voices of our collaborators.
Their thoughts, their stories, their frequencies.

We begin with Call+Continuum; a theme we explored through being commissioned by the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme, to curate sounds in celebration of the role South African women play in the creative industries. These are women who are not just making music, but holding memory.

Resisting erasure.
Declaring existence.

The Call is loud, intentional, undeniable.
The Continuum is subtle, generational, grounding.

We asked: What does Call + Continuum mean to you?

Through phone calls, voice notes and conversation, they answered.

There are their reflections.
Their words become the archive.
Their voices carry the line forward.

Song on Call+Continuum: Isiphithiphithi

DemiMa is a burgeoning South African artist who is gracefully continuing the illustrious musical legacy of her renowned family, as the grand-niece of legendary jazz musician Bheki Mseleku. Having nurtured her artistry since childhood, DemiMa announced herself with her soulful debut single "Sondela," a poignant narrative exploring themes of love, identity, and belonging that deeply resonate with her own development between London and Durban.

Profoundly inspired by the rhythmic patterns of Zulu praise singers, she was drawn to poetry early on as an essential outlet for her expression. "Sondela" offers a compelling glimpse into her fusion of tradition and diverse musical influences, including the late Busi Mhlongo, Floetry, Dwele, and Erykah Badu.

Her artistic ethos is a sonic and conceptual synthesis of her roots with elements of neo-soul, jazz, bossa nova, hip-hop, and psychedelic rock. Describing "Sondela" as "a love story to the people of the Diaspora that Mama Africa is inviting them closer," DemiMa is re-energising neo-soul with an afrocentricity that is both delicate and vibrantly compelling. She began her musical scholarship with her grandmother and had the distinct privilege of performing with her grand-uncle Bheki Mseleku at London's Jazz Cafe at the age of 15, singing his song "Through the Years" with Abbey Lincoln.
