About Call + Continuum

A collaboration with the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme.

About The Call Log

We have opened a line: A space to listen, to archive, to honour those who journey with us.

We gather the voices of our collaborators.
Their thoughts, their stories, their frequencies.

We begin with Call+Continuum; a theme we explored through being commissioned by the Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme, to curate sounds in celebration of the role South African women play in the creative industries. These are women who are not just making music, but holding memory.

Resisting erasure.
Declaring existence.

The Call is loud, intentional, undeniable.
The Continuum is subtle, generational, grounding.

We asked: What does Call + Continuum mean to you?

Through phone calls, voice notes and conversation, they answered.

There are their reflections.
Their words become the archive.
Their voices carry the line forward.

Song on Call+Continuum: Exiled

Thandi Ntuli, born on September 10, 1987, in Soshanguve, Pretoria, is a highly respected South African pianist, vocalist, and songwriter, celebrated for her immense talent within jazz circles.

Growing up in a family rich with musical heritage, her father played piano and guitar, her grandfather composed songs, and her aunt was a classical singer, whilst her uncle, Selby Ntuli, was a member of the legendary Afro-rock band Harari. Thandi began classical piano lessons at age four and later developed an interest in jazz during high school, penning her first composition in the tenth grade. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from the University of Cape Town in 2010, drawn to jazz by the beauty of improvisation.

Her debut album, The Offering, released in 2014, received critical acclaim and numerous awards and recognition, including a MetroFM award nomination for “Best Urban Jazz” in 2015. Notably, she also received the coveted Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz in 2018. Thandi's work explores the fullness of identity, negotiating a wide palette of sound and genre, and firmly situates her and the contemporary South African generation within the musical canon. Her frank yet empathetic gaze on herself and the world has birthed a body of work that facilitates access to histories, presents, and futures, creating a home for young South Africans and creatives, especially women.
